Getting into heavy metal

sorry it’s so out of focus but the color is right on from this monitor anyway. Here is the roving after dyeing it with first the quince flower and then the quince branch dyes I made last week. I used the iron mordant from the rusty saw blade. I’m not sure I would have gone for this color, but it is pretty true to the dye’s pinkish brown. I’m feeling pretty good about it and I think it is beautiful. I get the natural dye satisfaction thing. I grew the flower, made the dye, made the mordant all from my garden and kitchen and old shed. Pretty cool.

The first roving I dyed that I got impatient with and threw in some acid dyes looks pretty good too. I would really like to try to spin it. Or make some felt. Oh I feel another obsession coming on.

    Hi Marjorie:

What type of wool did you dye? Have you checked out the book:
Harvesting Color: How to Find Plants and Make Natural Dyes by Rebecca Burgess. It’s a great book. Or, The Handbook of Natural Plant Dyes: Personalize Your Craft with Organic Colors from Acorns, Blackberries, Coffee, and Other Everyday Ingredients by Sasha Duerr. Both are terrific!

    Happy dyeing,

    Michele (Fullofiber)

Hi Michelle and thanks for your comment! I have not seen these books but will look for them. I used merino fiber (I think) I bought it for felting and had been planning to dye it for a while. I think I will overdye it after I take a look at one of the books you suggested. Thanks for finding me!I am going to take a look at your site. See you there!

Marjorie – have you painted fabrics? If so, what is the best “paint” to use?

    • marjorie says:

Hi is that you Susan? I like Dynaflow by jacquard. I also like to make thickener from alginate and use with procion dye. For printing I use ink. How about you?

      • Curls & Q says:

I haven’t tried fabric painting yet! It’s a new media I want to try, so I figured I needed to ask an expert! I’m going to Blick Art tomorrow and look for “stuff”.

I’m no expert! There are many brands I haven’t tried. Lots of pearls and metallics. Have fun shopping. I want to hear all about it!
